Software simulations

Captivate alternatives for software simulations: 9 tools compared

Adobe Captivate turns one pass with its recorder into a Demo, a Training simulation and a scored Assessment. Most lists of Captivate alternatives mix that in with screenshot and video tools that produce something else. The line that matters is what the learner does: perform the clicks and get told when they are wrong, or read and watch. This page sorts nine alternatives by that line, with prices and mechanics from each vendor's own pages.

Short answer

Choose Storyline 360 if you want the closest like-for-like Captivate alternative, a desktop tool whose recorder produces View, Try and Test modes, or dominKnow | ONE or iorad if you want one capture published in many formats; if reading or watching is enough, Scribe, Guidde, Camtasia or Rise 360 are quicker to produce. Choose Recourse if you want practice with hints and a scored Evaluate mode built from a Chrome click-through or a recording you already have, with live SCORM so the LMS copy stays current after the software changes.

What Captivate does, and what it costs

Captivate is a desktop authoring app for Windows and macOS; the current version is 13.2, released 26 August 2026. You choose New simulation and record the task, and Captivate builds Demo (captions from the labels of what you clicked), Training (click boxes, input fields, hint and failure captions) and Assessment (no hints, a point for each correct click, reported to the LMS through "Include in quiz"). It publishes SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, AICC and xAPI. Adobe lists the individual plan at US$39.99 a month, with Captivate Classic, 100GB of storage and 25 generative credits a month included; teams buy through Adobe sales. The reasons people look elsewhere are mechanical: a simulation comes only from Captivate's own recorder at the moment of recording, and Adobe's pages describe no hosted package that updates the LMS copy after an edit.

Practise: the learner performs the steps

1. Recourse

Recourse runs in the browser. You click through the task in the real web app with the Chrome extension, or upload any recording of it, such as a Loom, a Zoom share, a recorded UAT or handover session, or an old MP4; desktop apps are covered by uploading a video. It generates the steps and AI voice narration, a reviewer edits every step, and the result has three modes: Demo (a guided walkthrough with narration), Practice (the learner does each step in a safe copy; if stuck, a hint, then a nudge, then the answer) and Evaluate (scored with a pass mark, reported to the LMS). When a screen changes, you re-capture that step and regenerate it. Static SCORM and xAPI come with Pro; Team adds live SCORM, where the package points at the hosted course so an edit reaches every LMS copy. Simulations cover clicks and typed input; branching is on the roadmap. Price: free for 30 days with full access; Solo, Pro and Team pricing on request. Suits teams that already have recordings of the task, or whose software changes often enough that re-uploading packages is the real cost. See Recourse vs Captivate.

2. Articulate Storyline 360

The closest like-for-like replacement. Storyline's screen recorder captures up to two hours at a time, and you insert the recording as a video or as step-by-step slides in View mode (watch), Try mode (practice, which Articulate calls an ungraded assessment) or Test mode (graded, with a results slide and optional attempt limits). For web apps Articulate recommends recording in Firefox, because Chrome reports little to the Windows accessibility layer and steps can be missed. Storyline is a Windows desktop app; there is no native Mac version, so Mac users run it in Parallels or VMware. It publishes SCORM, AICC, cmi5 and xAPI. It is sold as part of Articulate 360 AI: $1,449 a year for Personal or $1,749 per seat per year for Teams, with Rise 360 included and a 14-day trial. Suits instructional designers who want full control of every slide, trigger and interaction. See Storyline alternatives and Recourse vs Storyline.

3. iorad

iorad captures with a Chrome, Firefox or Edge extension, or Mac and Windows apps for desktop programs, and generates six modes from one capture: Watch (video), Scroll and Slide (reading), Try (practice in a safe environment), Quiz, where learners "need to complete the correct action on screen in order to progress", and Do, which guides the learner through the steps and can run live in the real application. The Free plan has no time limit but tutorials are public; Individual is $200 a month, Team is $500 a month with one seat and $50 a month per extra seat, and Enterprise is quoted. SCORM, HTML and SharePoint packages come through Advanced Exports on Enterprise. Suits support and enablement teams who want tutorials people use while working in the app. See iorad alternatives.

4. Assima

Assima captures the objects of the user interface in one pass, not just pixels, and calls the result patented cloning. Learners can click, scroll, use dropdowns and enter data into fields in any order, on a copy that behaves like the real screen, and the platform tracks activity down to each click and field. Output modes are self-paced, instructor-led, blended, evaluation and interactive learning. Content is SCORM 1.2 and 2004 compliant, and Assima supports LTI 1.3. There is no price on the website and no trial; sales start with a demo. Suits large enterprises training on business systems where practice must accept real data entry.

5. dominKnow | ONE

A cloud-based authoring platform and content management system with a built-in Capture feature that records a screenshot per step, with hotspots and instruction text. One capture publishes as Show me (demonstration), Guide me (guided steps), Try me (hands-on practice), Practice (unscored) and Test me (scored), and exports to SCORM, xAPI, HTML5, MP4 and printable job aids. Pricing is per author, learners are free, and every package is a custom quote; there is a free trial. Suits teams that build ordinary courses and software simulations and want both in one platform.

Read or watch: guides, videos and courses

6. Rise 360

Articulate's web-based, block-based course builder: courses adapt to every screen, and blocks include process steps and knowledge checks that AI Assistant can draft. Rise has no screen recorder or simulation mode of its own. Courses publish to SCORM 1.2 or 2004, AICC, cmi5 or xAPI. It is included with Storyline in Articulate 360 AI at $1,449 or $1,749 per seat per year. Suits teams that want clean, responsive reading courses about a process rather than practice on it.

7. Guidde

Capture produces an AI-narrated how-to video with a step guide. Free has limits; Pro is $29 a month or $19 billed yearly per creator; Business is $59 or $39 and adds the desktop app; Enterprise adds SSO and SCORM export for an LMS. The learner watches; there is no try or test mode. Suits support and customer education teams that need many short videos quickly.

8. Scribe

A browser extension turns clicks into a screenshot guide; the desktop app and PDF, HTML, Markdown and Word export are on Pro and Enterprise. Basic is free; Pro Personal is $35 a month or $25 billed yearly per seat, and Pro Team is $17 or $13 per seat from five seats. SCORM is not mentioned on its pricing page, and there is no practice mode. Suits documenting processes for a knowledge base.

9. Camtasia

TechSmith's screen recorder and video editor for Windows 10 and 11 and macOS 14 or later. Essentials, at $179.88 a year, includes cursor effects, captions, and quizzes with SCORM export; Pro, at $599 a year, adds AI avatars, translation and stock assets. The learner watches a video and can answer quiz questions, but does not perform the steps. Suits polished, narrated walkthrough videos that still need LMS tracking.

What Recourse does not do

No overlay or in-app guidance on the live application, so iorad's Do mode has no equivalent. No branching yet: each simulation follows one right path. Branching is on the roadmap. No LTI, cmi5 or AICC. No native LMS. No threaded review comments. Desktop applications only through an uploaded video. It cannot open Captivate project files.

How to choose

  1. Must the learner do the task, or know about it? If they must do it, stay in the Practise group. Guides and videos are faster to make but do not check a single click.
  2. Does the recording exist already? Captivate, Storyline, iorad, Assima and dominKnow build steps from their own recorders. Recourse also works from a recording made earlier, such as a Loom or a Zoom share.
  3. Do learners need to type? Captivate records keystrokes into input fields and Assima accepts data entry in its cloned screens. Recourse simulations include typed steps too.
  4. How often does the app change, and how is the LMS kept current? Recourse live SCORM updates every LMS copy in place. With static packages, each change is a new upload.
  5. Which computers do your authors use? Storyline needs Windows or a Windows virtual machine. Captivate and Camtasia run on Windows and macOS. Recourse, Rise and dominKnow run in a browser.
