WalkMe alternatives: 8 options after the SAP acquisition

WalkMe invented the digital adoption platform category in 2011 and has been part of SAP since September 2024. For SAP customers that is good news: WalkMe is being wired into Joule and SuccessFactors. For everyone else it raises the question this page answers. The alternatives below are split into overlays that guide people inside the application, and training tools that produce content people complete outside it, because they solve different problems.

Short answer

If you want another overlay DAP, Whatfix is the closest match on features, Pendo is the one with a free tier and product analytics, and Userlane and Apty are the smaller, simpler options. If you are an Oracle shop, Oracle Guided Learning is built in. If what you actually need is training, simulations and SCORM rather than in-app nudges, look at Recourse, ClickLearn or EpilogueIQ. And if you are an SAP shop, note that leaving WalkMe now means leaving the platform SAP is standardising on.

What changed at WalkMe

SAP announced the acquisition on 5 June 2024 at $14.00 a share, about $1.5 billion and a 45% premium, and closed it on 12 September 2024; WalkMe was delisted from Nasdaq. SAP said WalkMe "will continue to fully support non-SAP applications". Since then: the Joule action bar "powered by WalkMe" was announced at Sapphire in May 2025 and made available to all WalkMe customers in February 2026; WalkMe runs dedicated SAP US and EU data centres; and WalkMe Learning Arc, announced September 2025, is the product SAP Enable Now customers are being moved to, with renewals of Enable Now ending 30 April 2027.

The product itself: Smart Walk-Thrus, SmartTips, Launchers, ShoutOuts, surveys and a Menu, delivered through a JavaScript snippet or a browser extension pushed by IT, with a desktop agent for SAP GUI (Windows only; other desktop apps get pop-up steps only). Element recognition is DeepUI, which WalkMe says re-finds elements after UI updates; the help centre still documents the error "The element is not present on this page" with "Re-select element" as the first fix, and a Step Failures report was added in 2026. Pricing is quote-only with the metric unstated. Learning Arc adds a recorder for web and desktop workflows, Demo, Practice and Test simulations, SCORM 1.2 and 2004 export (manual re-export after edits) and a 30-day trial.

Overlays: guidance inside the application

1. Whatfix

The most direct substitute. Flows, Smart Tips, Beacons, Self Help and Task Lists on web apps via a JavaScript embed or extensions, plus Whatfix Desktop for SAP GUI, S/4HANA, ECC and Java applications. Mirror adds interactive replicas for sandbox practice, assessments and AI role-play. Flows export as SCORM 1.2 or xAPI on Enterprise (support enables it) and Mirror as SCORM 1.2 or 2004. UI changes are fixed by reselecting elements, with an AI auto-heal in beta and scheduled auto-testing of Flows. 81 interface languages. Pricing is quote-based on employees with access; the company raised $125 million in September 2024. G2 rating about 4.6 from roughly 545 reviews, by Whatfix's own count.

2. Pendo

Product analytics first, guidance second. The free plan covers up to 500 monthly active users, which no one else here offers; paid tiers are quote-based per MAU. Employee-facing use needs the Pendo Launcher extension and is web-only, with no SCORM, simulations or document output. It is the right tool if you want to know what people do in your own product and nudge them; it is not a training tool.

3. Userlane

A Munich-based DAP positioned for regulated industries, deployed as a browser extension pushed through group policy, web-only. Guides are built by recording clicks in its editor and anchored by CSS selectors with manual refinement. Pricing is a fixed annual fee per application or usage-based with unlimited applications, quote only. It names SAP S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, Ariba, Concur and Fiori and Dynamics 365 modules as web targets.

4. Apty

Founded 2017 as LetzNav, Apty sells a DAP with walkthroughs, tooltips, validations, checklists and form auto-fill, scoped pricing with all features included and a "2x ROI in year one or your money back" guarantee. Its public technical documentation has gone offline during a rebrand to apty.ai, so capture method and desktop support could not be verified.

5. Oracle Guided Learning

Embedded in Oracle Fusion Cloud, NetSuite and APEX and configurable for PeopleSoft, JD Edwards and E-Business Suite plus non-Oracle web apps. Web-only, 31 languages, nine analytics dashboards, a simulation mode on paid tiers, no SCORM. Priced per user, per year, per application, with an included tier for Fusion limited to 15 guides.

Training tools: content people complete

6. Recourse

Not a DAP: nothing runs on top of your live application. It is a training tool that starts from a recording of the real system. Click through a web workflow with the Recourse Chrome extension, which captures the screens, the clicks and the structure, or upload any recording of any app (a recorded UAT session, a Zoom share, an old MP4), and it builds a click-by-click simulation with Demo, Practice and Evaluate modes, with hints when a learner stalls and a scored pass mark in Evaluate that reports to the LMS. The simulation is wrapped in a structured course. Pro exports static SCORM and xAPI; Team is three seats with unlimited simulations, live SCORM, so an edit reaches every LMS without re-upload; Solo shares courses by link with no SCORM. It is free for 30 days with full access, and Solo, Pro and Team are priced on request. If your WalkMe use case was "stop people getting stuck mid-task", Recourse does not replace it; if it was "get people competent before go-live", it does.

7. ClickLearn

Records processes in Dynamics, SAP, Oracle, IFS and Salesforce with a Windows studio and browser extension and produces seven formats (Show Me, Try Me and Test Me videos, Word, PDF, PowerPoint, a Virtual Assistant) in 45 languages, with SCORM 1.2 and 2004 export and a Replay feature that re-drives the live app to refresh screenshots. Also offers an in-app panel, so it sits between categories. Quote-based with no self-serve trial. See ClickLearn alternatives.

8. EpilogueIQ

A Chrome or Edge extension plus a desktop recorder produces Follow Me walkthroughs on top of Oracle, SAP, Workday, Salesforce and ServiceNow, along with watch, try and test simulations, job aids and books, exported as MP4, PDF, SCORM, HTML and xAPI in 32 languages. "No code: no element selectors to map" is the pitch against WalkMe-style anchoring. Per-user or enterprise-unlimited pricing with a $6,000 implementation fee.

How to choose

  1. In the flow, or before it? Overlays help at the moment of doing; training builds competence beforehand and gives you a completion record. Most ERP rollouts need both, which is why Whatfix and ClickLearn straddle the line.
  2. Which applications? SAP GUI and other desktop software need a desktop agent (WalkMe, Whatfix, ClickLearn, EpilogueIQ) or a video (Recourse). Pendo, Userlane and Oracle Guided Learning are web-only.
  3. What happens when the UI changes? Overlays re-select elements, with varying degrees of automation. Training content is either re-recorded or, with hosted packages, edited once and updated everywhere.
  4. Can you try it? Only Pendo (free tier), WalkMe Learning Arc and Recourse let you start without a sales call.

What Recourse does not do

  • No overlay on the live application and no in-app guidance.
  • No branching yet: each simulation follows one right path. Branching is on the roadmap.
  • No LTI, cmi5 or AICC output.
  • No native LMS.
  • No threaded review comments.
  • Desktop applications only through an uploaded video.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns WalkMe?
SAP. The acquisition was announced on 5 June 2024 at $14 a share, about $1.5 billion, and closed on 12 September 2024. SAP has said WalkMe will continue to support non-SAP applications, and has built WalkMe into the Joule action bar and made WalkMe Learning Arc the successor to SAP Enable Now.
How much does WalkMe cost?
WalkMe does not publish prices. There are two quote-based plans, WalkMe for employees and WalkMe for customers, and the pricing metric is not stated. WalkMe Learning Arc, the training product, has a 30-day trial with no card.
Does WalkMe break when the application UI changes?
Sometimes. WalkMe's DeepUI recognition is designed to re-find elements after UI updates, but its help centre still documents the error The element is not present on this page, with Re-select element as the first fix, plus Adaptive Flows and a Step Failures report for catching breaks. Any overlay DAP has the same exposure.
What is the difference between a DAP and a training tool?
A digital adoption platform overlays guidance on the live application while someone works. A training tool produces courses, simulations and documents that are completed before or outside the work, usually tracked in an LMS. WalkMe, Whatfix, Pendo, Userlane, Apty and Oracle Guided Learning are DAPs; ClickLearn, EpilogueIQ and Recourse are training tools, and Whatfix and ClickLearn do both.
